American Women Quarters List With Pictures: Which One Do I Have?
If your quarter has a woman on the back and George Washington facing right on the front, it is one of 20 American Women Quarters struck between 2022 and 2025. Her name is written on the coin. Find the name in the list below to see which one it is, how many were made, and what it is worth.
Two things make these coins confusing at a glance, and both are deliberate design decisions rather than errors.
There is no date on the back. The date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST are all on the obverse, the Washington side. The state, territory and national park quarters of 1999 to 2021 carried the date on the reverse, which is why so many people turn these coins over looking for it.
Washington faces right, not left. If you are used to the quarter in your pocket from 1999 to 2021, Washington faced left. The portrait on these coins is a different one entirely: Laura Gardin Fraser's 1931 design, rejected at the time and finally adopted ninety years later. A right-facing Washington is not an error and not a rare variety.

By year, with mintages and set sales: 2022 · 2023 · 2024 · 2025. Wondering who is on the front? Who is on the quarter explains Washington, and the 2026 exceptions.
Where the mint mark is, and what it means
Turn the coin over to the Washington side. Below the date, to the right of his neck, is a single letter.
- P for Philadelphia and D for Denver are the two mints that struck these coins for circulation. Anything you find in change will be one of these.
- S for San Francisco appears only on proof and collector issues, which were sold in sets and never released into circulation. An S-mint coin in your change came out of somebody's collection.
- There is no W in this series. The West Point quarters people remember were the 2019 and 2020 America the Beautiful issues, a different program.
The mint mark does not make a coin valuable here. Both P and D were struck in the tens or hundreds of millions for every design.
What the inscriptions tell you
Every reverse in the series carries the honoree's name, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination written as QUARTER DOLLAR, 25 CENTS or 25¢. Beyond that the designers were free, and most added a few words naming why the woman was chosen: DARK MATTER on the Vera Rubin coin, DISABILITY JUSTICE on the Stacey Park Milbern, JOURNALIST, SUFFRAGIST and CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST on the Ida B. Wells.
Two sets of small initials also appear, usually at the lower left and lower right. One is the artist who designed the reverse; the other is the U.S. Mint sculptor who turned that artwork into a die. Both are credited here for all 20 coins.
What it is worth, briefly
Twenty-five cents, if you found it in change. That holds for all 20 designs, both mints, every year, with no exceptions. The full reasoning, and the four situations where a coin in this series is genuinely worth more, are on the value page.
If something about your coin looks wrong, doubled lettering, a missing layer, a raised lump, start with the errors page, which lists the handful of errors documented in this program and nine tests that separate a genuine mint error from ordinary damage.
Last verified: October 2026. Mintage figures are final.
