What each column means
| P and D | The circulation strikes, from Philadelphia and Denver. These are the coins in your change, and a complete 40-coin P and D set can be assembled entirely from circulation and bank rolls. |
|---|---|
| S unc. | San Francisco uncirculated coins, sold by the Mint to collectors in rolls and sets and never released into circulation. You will not find these in change; they come from the Mint's original packaging or the secondary market. |
| Clad proof | Mirror-finish proofs in the normal copper-nickel composition, struck at San Francisco and sold each year in a five-coin American Women Quarters Proof Set and in the annual U.S. Mint Proof Set. |
| Silver proof | The same proofs struck in .999 fine silver and sold in the five-coin American Women Quarters Silver Proof Set. Heavier than the clad coins at 6.343 g. |
How to collect the series
Start with the 40 circulation coins
Twenty designs, two mints each. This is the set most people mean, it costs face value, and it is entirely achievable from change. The later designs are harder to find than the early ones, because fewer were struck: the four lowest mintages in the program are all from 2025, and the Denver Stacey Park Milbern is the scarcest single coin among them. See the key date page for why.
Bank rolls are the efficient way to search. A $10 roll holds 40 quarters, and because every design in this series shows its honoree on the reverse, you can sort a roll by eye in a minute.
Then decide how far to go
The S uncirculated coins and the two kinds of proof were all sold to collectors, so completing those columns means buying rather than searching. None of them is expensive in normal condition, and all of them survive in large numbers because they went straight from the Mint into collections.
Keeping the coins in good condition
- Hold coins by the edge. Fingerprints on an uncirculated or proof surface are permanent.
- Never clean a coin. Cleaning removes the original surface and lowers the value of anything that had any. There is no cleaning method that collectors or graders accept.
- Use archival storage. A coin folder or album is fine for a circulation set. Avoid soft plastic flips containing PVC, which leave a green residue over time.
- Leave proofs in their Mint packaging. The capsules are designed for long-term storage, and an intact original set is what the secondary market prefers.
What not to pay for
Every coin on this checklist is common. Be cautious of listings charging premiums for P or D coins described as rare, error, or "key", and of anything priced at .95 or .99, which marks a retail asking price rather than a sale. The value page explains what these coins actually sell for, and the errors page lists the very short list of genuine errors in this series.
